The Twilight Saga revisited

We all hated and laughed at the Twilight Saga when the movies first came out. But now that all five installments are on Netflix, I decided to actually watch them and take them seriously.

Yes, the dialogue is awful and some parts will just make you cringe; those are a given. But the most disturbing part of the entire series is Bella Swan herself. Imagine:

1. All her life, her mom took care of her. She just goes to her dad's house for two weeks in a year. BUT SHE CHOSE HER DAD OVER HER MOM BECAUSE SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH A BOY.

2. Said boy left her abruptly, so she's suddenly single. Instead of cultivating hobbies and  enjoying her friendship with her female friends, she chases after another boy and made him her rebound.

3. Now the rebound is undergoing major life changes, so even he started to stay away from her. She practically begs for him to not leave her, promising him the moon and the stars.

4. However, her first love suddenly returns, so she drops the rebound like a hot potato, AFTER BEGGING HIM TO NOT LEAVE HER.

5. But even after choosing her first love, she still refuses to let the rebound go. She kissed and hugged him a lot, virtually telling him that while she doesn't want him, no one else should have him either.

6. She has this amazing set of friends, yet she always brushed them aside and ignored them. It's a wonder they still wanted to go to her wedding.

7. The moment she marries her first love, Bella Swan suddenly has the strength to handle extreme physical pain, risk her life for her unborn (and half undead) child, and curb her immense thirst for human blood. Where was all this  willpower, patience, and emotional strength when she was a single girl? Bella Swan could have used all that to get over the boys who tried to leave her.

So, Bella Swan, terrible daughter, worst friend, is a selfish, selfish girl. She is someone no girl should emulate.

If there is one thing the Twilight Saga had going for itself, it's Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson's intense chemistry. He is brooding and consuming, and she looks like ice cream na natutunaw sa ilalim ng araw when she's around him.

As her future movies will prove, Kristen Stewart is actually not a bad actress (see Cafe Society, Charlie's Angels [2019], and Clouds of Sils Maria), but Bella Swan is just a horrendous character to portray.
